Essentials To Breathing
Breathing is as important as your life. That is why you must not play with it. Below are things you should know about breathing:
  1. Breath is indeed the source of life.
  2. You can walk, and you can run, but without breath you can do neither. You must learn the system of breathing.
  3. You must recognize the standard of time in which to breathe. Unless you know this standard of time, you cannot apportion the various ratios of time to your breathing.
  4. People breathe at different rates for different purposes.
  5. First, take your heart’s timing, your pulse, in the rhythm of one, two, three, four, five, six.
  6. You breathe in air for as long as it takes your heart takes to beat six times. That is not good enough. You should be able to vary your breathing at times.
  7. Before you can do anything good about breathing you must have a rhythm, a unit of time that represents a normal inhalation.
  8. Your heart beat is the proper rhythmic standard for your breathing.
  9. Good breathing is an easy thing and very important, which can lead to impressive results in improved health.
Breathing methods
         Four methods of breathing are:
  1. The first method is known as top breathing. It is a very poor method, indeed. In this system, only the upper parts of the chest and lungs are used. It involves the smallest part of your breath cavity, and you get very little air into your lungs, and still get a lot of stale (used) air in the deepest parts. When you breathe in this way, you make only the top of your chest move. The bottom part of your chest and your abdomen are motionless, and that is a very bad thing. Forget about top breathing because it is quite useless. It is the worst form of breathing.
  2. Let us deal with the second system of breathing, known as middle breathing. It is also not a very good form of breathing.
  3. The third system of breathing is low breathing. It is a little better than the other two systems, and it still is not correct. Some call this low breathing ‘abdominal breathing’.
  4. The fourth is the Complete Breath. It makes full use of your chest and lung cavities, providing optimim breath advantage and removing all stale air in every cycle of breathe. This is the true method of breathing. This method has enabled some of the spiritually enlightened ones to prolong their life to a truly remarkable span.
The Complete Breathing
This method includes the other three systems: low breathing, middle breathing, and top breathing. The lungs are truly filled with air. Therefore, the blood is purified and filled with life force. It is a very easy system of breathing. You can have it sitting or standing, in a comfortable position.
  1. Breathe through the nostrils. You must keep your spine upright, not bent, curved or slouched. That is the secret of correct breathing.
  2. Keep your abdomen under control, and your arms at your sides.
  3. Expand your chest, force your ribs outwards, as you breathe, so that you push down your diaphragm and make the lower abdomen protrudes also.
  4. Get as much air into your lungs as possible.
  5. Then, you have to breathe out all the air and replace it by breathing in.
  6. You may feel that this is intricate, difficult, and not worth the effort. But, it really worths the effort.
  7. The only purpose of breathing is to take in as much air as possible, distribute it throughout the body in a different form, and then breathing out the stale air.
  8. Do inhale, slowly. Retain that breath for a few seconds, and then exhale quite slowly.
Cleansing Breath
Learn how to cleanse your body with breath.
  1. Do it at the beginning and ending of every day.
  2. Do it also at the beginning and ending of every particular exercise or activity.
  3. That is how to arrive at your destination untroubled, serene, peaceful, controlled, and undisturbed.
  4. I determined that long before I too was a lama—for at this stage I was just an acolyte—I would master.
  5. Inhale completely, three complete breaths, really deep ones, the deepest that you can manage. Fill your lungs, and let yourself become full of air.
  6. With the third breath, retain that air for some four seconds, (count one, two, three, four).
  7. Screw up your lips, as if you want to whistle, but do not puff out the cheeks.
  8. Blow a little air through the opening in your lips with all the vigour that you can.
  9. Blow it out hard, let it go free.
  10. Then stop for a second, retaining the air which is still left inside you.
  11. Below out a little more, still with all the vigour you can muster.
  12. Stop for another second, and then blow out the remainder until there is no longer any air left inside your lungs. Blow it out as hard as you can.
  13. Remember you to exhale with very vigour through the opening in your lips.
  14. You will find that this is remarkably refreshing.
  15. Avoid breathing too quickly.
  16. Always caution those whom you are teaching to be careful to follow these exercises, and not to experiment.
More Points
To acquire mental control, sit erect and inhale one complete breath.
  • Inhale one cleansing breath by inhaling at the rate of one, four, two. Inhale for five seconds, then hold your breath for twenty seconds, and breathe out for ten seconds. You can cure yourself of a lot of pain by breathing properly, and this cleansing breath is a very good method.
  • If you are feeling tired or there is a sudden demand on your energies, the cleansing breath is the quickest way to recover your peace and strength. If you are nervous, take a really deep breath, through your nostrils. Hold that breath for ten seconds. Then exhale slowly with the breath under full control all the time. Repeat this three times.
  • Breathing is indeed the source of life.
